Changthang Passes *exploratory

We traverse an untrekked region of the Ladakh Range

Our 2012 exploration revealed just how high and unexplored the Changthang is, with the local headman telling up that no trekkers had EVER crossed the pass we were aiming for. We didn't meet a single other trekking group for the entire trip, during absolute peak season.

This is classic trekking with delightful campsites, and with some 6000m scrambling, a great substitute for Stok Kangri or Kang Yatze's 6100m secondary peak with the bonus of visiting Pangong Tso (lake) en route too.

Day 1 - Tuesday 9 July 2013 - meet in Leh 3500m

We meet you at Leh airport (code IXL) and you can now relax.

2-3 - Leh 3500m

Time to relax or to explore, and the all important time acclimatizing. Leh is a sightseer's and photographer's paradise.

4 - drive Tangtse 3950m via the Chang La 5300m

What a spectacular 5-6 hour drive (rough for the top section), and we stay at the perfect altitude for further gentle acclimatization.

5 - drive Pangong Lake, Spangmik 4280m

A further short drive and we reach the ever-changing light of this 60km long lake.

6 - drive Sasakul 4200m

Partly retracing, it is a couple of hours to the start point of our trek, and after time here we are now acclimatized, ready to start trekking at these very high altitudes.

7 - trek junction camp 4700m

8 - explore junction camp 4700m

9 - trek camp 5080m

10 - trek 5300m camp via unmarked pass 5780m

Yes, that is a HIGH pass! Hence the acclimatization en route.

11 - trek Tamki 5200m via Yongma La 5600m

12 - exploration

13 - trek camp 4750m

14 - trek 5150m camp

We know and love this area, and there are plenty of scrambling opportunities, even to above six grand.

15 - exploration

16 - trek Gun La BC via Gongma La 5850m

17 - trek Kyungyam Chu via Gun La 5600m

18 - trek Kyungyam 4110m

19 - drive Leh

It is about a 10km hike down the valley to Kumdak to meet the road where Angchuk and the team pick us up, then ~3 hours drive to Leh. Lets have a celebration!

Day 20 - Sunday 28 July - trip ends

You are free to fly out today to Delhi - or to stay in Leh for an extra day or two... The Leh-Delhi flight should get you to Delhi before midday, but do note that on rare occasions it can be delayed a day by bad weather.

Gear

Boots - you need tough boots for the trek, the rock underfoot is sharp and some areas have only very thin trails. For the scrambling, your normal tough boots will do, even to 6000m, but if you want to climb on snow then please discuss with me.
